SD 23, SD 8 and PRCVI are excited to announce the first Marine Science Program at Bamfield Marine Science Center March 31st to April 5th 2019
Who: Any British Columbia student with a vision impairment in Grades 9-12 may apply.
When: March 31st to April 5th 2019
Where: Bamfield Marine Science Centre located in Bamfield, Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC, http://www.bamfieldmsc.com/
Transportation: Transportation provided from Nanaimo to Bamfield and back. Students and their Vision Teachers will be responsible to arrange their own transportation to Nanaimo.
Accommodation: Students will be staying in dormitories with a full cafeteria providing breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout the day. Any accompanying teachers will be provided with dormitory style accommodation with two teachers to a room with twin beds.
Particulars: Interested students can apply. A maximum of 10 students will be selected to attend the Marine Science program. Vision teachers may be able to accompany their student(s). Costs and particulars will be provided to successful applicants.
What: Students will spend 4 days immersed in Marine Science classes, lectures and fieldwork at the Bamfield Marine Science Center. The students will work individually and in groups learning about the biology, chemistry, morphology and ecology of the West Coast.
Activities include: Kelp lab, Beach ecology walk, Marine invertebrate Touch pools, Adaptations in marine mammals, Climate change and Oceans, Ocean plastic, Ocean sampling and plankton collection on board a marine research vessel and more.
A majority of the educational learning opportunities that will be taught and covered during the time at Bamfield are directly related to or covered in Science 10, Biology 11 and 12.

Cost: The cost of the program has been reduced thanks to the support of various sponsors. Current cost is approximately $620 per person for the week, which includes transportation to and from Bamfield from Nanaimo, all food, accommodations and on-site activities for the week. Additional scholarships and funding opportunities are also available for students.
