Learning materials at The Bamfield Marine Science Centre will be made available in a format that is accessible to each students' unique needs. All reading materials, including labs materials, will be available in regular print, large print and braille medias. Audio copies may also be available. Some materials may be sent to the students ahead of time to access on personal devices. Students will have access to Perkins Braille Writers, braille paper and a PIAF machine (Pictures in a Flash) to create tactile pictures. We also encourage students to bring their own personal devices to support their learning.
Students will also work with trained Orientation and Mobility Specialists to learn the layout of the Bamfield Science Centre facility and to ensure safe mobility both on and off the research vessels. Tactile maps of the facility will be available for students to review. Students should come prepared to use their mobility tools, including long canes, ID canes, monoculars or binoculars, hiking poles, GPS devices, flash lights and any other tool used for safe travel.
If you are a teacher of students who are blind or visually impaired or Orientation & Mobility Specialist, we encourage you to look through the resources provided in this section and review the information with your student(s) prior to the start of the program.
